Birketts advises on £100m+ real estate investment portfolio acquisition
18 March 2019
Leading East of England law firm Birketts has advised affiliates of Westbrook Partners (Westbrook) on the acquisition of a large portfolio of light industrial estates and trade counters located across the UK for a value in excess of £100m.
Westbrook, a U.S. real estate investment management company founded in 1994, has been among the world’s most active and successful investors, having raised and invested more than $14bn of equity in over $50bn of real estate transactions in major markets throughout the world, and has been active in the UK for over 15 years.
Birketts worked alongside Allen & Overy LLP and were engaged in all aspects of the property diligence and transaction implementation. Cameron Barlow led the Birketts team which involved over 40 lawyers across the Norwich, Cambridge and Ipswich offices in commercial property, planning and construction. Other key team members included Paul Squire, Gemma Goddard, Laura Jones, and Kris Nelson.
Cameron Barlow, Legal Director in Birketts’ Commercial Property Team, said: “We are delighted to have acted for Westbrook in connection with this important investment acquisition and also to have worked alongside our friends at Allen & Overy LLP. It was a complex project that required a team that had extensive experience of large scale portfolio investment acquisition and asset management work.”
David Collard, Managing Principal at Westbrook Partners, concluded: “The size, scale and complexity of this acquisition, together with a very tight timetable, meant that we needed a legal team that we could fully trust to deliver. Birketts has one of the largest and most successful property practices outside London and is rightly acknowledged as a market leader and we were confident throughout the process that under Cameron’s expert leadership we were in very safe hands.”
